The J B Firth Building is an interdisciplinary space containing 3 flexible use laboratories for general use and an extensively stocked open access analytical suite.

The J B Firth Building is an interdisciplinary space designed to cross traditional subject boundaries. The building opened in 2011 represents an £11.5M investment for the delivery of teaching and research. There are 3 flexible use laboratories for general use representing 721.5 m2 with 26 fume hoods fully equipped for wet chemistry and standard chemical analysis with a team of dedicated technical staff. The J B Firth building also houses and extensively stocked open access analytical suite of 336 m2 (please see instrumentation list below) for full sample characterisation. All of these facilities are available for consultancy use.

  • Horiba LabRam HR confocal Raman microscope with 532 and 785 nm lasers for point spectra, mapping and 3D imaging (Installed July 2012)
    • Sampling Accessories: Cuvette holder for rapid solution analysis, super head Raman probe, immersion Raman capability and catalyst stage for environmental control and heating
  • Agilent FTIR Microscope with MCT detector on the microscope and DTGS in the research grade bench. Fitted with Diamond and Germanium micro ATR-FTIR and macro ATR-FTIR in the macro sample compartment. PIKE environmental stage for temperature control available for macro bench sample compartment.
  • Range of transmission windows and sampling accessories available for all FTIRs with universal sample holders
  • 5 x ATR-FTIR systems (JASCO and Nicolet fitted with Pike Miracle and Golden Gate)
  • LC-MS/MS – Finnigan Surveyor with LCQ Advantage Max, Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation Source, Ion Trap and Autosampler
  • GC-MS/MS – Thermo system fitted with Ion Trap, compatible with direct insertion probe and autosampler
  • GC – MS Perkin Elmer system with pyrolysis probe
  • TRACE GC Ultra GC-MS fitted with DSQII Mass Spec system and compatible with direct insertion probe
  • Dionex Ion Chromatography System
  • 5 x HPLC systems fitted with UV and Refractive Index detectors
  • 4 x GC fitted with Flame Ionisation Detectors
